Happy Independence Day friends! I wanted to share with you my favorite July 4th pastime. Before moving to Boston, my July 4th celebrations in Buffalo never were all that exciting. It was like a normal day, with fireworks at the end. There wasn’t much hype around it. But when you move to a big city, everything becomes bigger.
Aside from the popular Boston Pops and fireworks show on The Esplanade and Charles River, there is a very special event that I love to watch the most. That is the annual sail of the USS Constitution. “Old Ironsides” is the oldest Navy warship still afloat. Every year, twice a year only, she comes off her dock for a “one nautical mile” sail, which many other ships in the harbor accompany her on.
She is usually brought out once in early June for a sea trial, and then again on July 4th. This year was extra special for me, as the Constitution’s sea trial in June was the same day as my wedding. I considered it a good luck charm when I looked out my hotel window to see her sail by as I was getting my hair and makeup done. Also, 2014 was her last “4th of July sail” until 2018. She is taking close to a four year hiatus for some restoration work.
Hurricane Arthur’s approach may have kept the normal crowds away, but it didn’t make the day any less special. Rain or shine, I hope all of you have a wonderful and safe July 4th.
See you in 2018 USS Constitution!
